WHO WE ARE
Steel City Swing is a non-profit organization based in Birmingham, AL. Our mission is to provide fun and accessible swing dance lessons for the Birmingham community. All of our staff, instructors and DJs work on a volunteer basis, except for special requested events.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS SWING DANCE?
Swing dance is an umbrella term to describe a variety of different dance styles that were developed primarily by African American dancers during the 1920s to 1940s in response to the popular music of the time (jazz and big band).
DO I NEED A PARTNER?
Not at all! While it is perfectly fine to bring a partner, we do rotate frequently during all of our lessons. Dancing is a great way to meet new friends and rotating partners gives everyone a chance to meet and dance with lots of different people.
DO I NEED PREVIOUS DANCE EXPERIENCE?
Nope! Unless otherwise stated in an event description, you don't need any prior dance knowledge. Our beginner lessons are designed to teach you from the ground up so no prior experience is necessary
