At all of our events, we require that all attendees, instructors, staff, and volunteers adhere to our code of conduct. By attending our events, you are agreeing to abide by the following rules:
- Dance in a manner that the person you are dancing with is comfortable with. The "right" way to dance is in a way that both partners are comfortable, regardless of what else is taught or who dances in a different way.
- Do not perform any aerials, air steps, or "floorials" of any kind on the social dance floor. The risk of injury to yourself, your partner and those around you is too high.
- Please use your full range of senses on the dance floor to avoid accidental collisions and injuries. It is every dancer's responsibility to be aware of their own and their partner's movement and position, as well as the movement and position of the dancers surrounding them, in order to avoid all forms of dangerous contact. If a collision, stop dancing and check in with each other to assess for injuries and apologize. If an injury occurs, find a staff member to help the injured party.
- Do not offer unsolicited advice to fellow dancers either in class or on the social dance floor. The only exception for this is to express if someone is hurting you. If you are more focused on critiquing those you are dancing with, you won’t be improving your own dancing. Our instructors are responsible for giving students feedback in classes, not student peers in the class.
- Respect when someone says "No" or "Stop" to you. Anyone can say "No" to any dance, or any activity, without offering an explanation at any time. No one is obligated to do the things that you may want to do. This includes dancing or doing a specific move while dancing, as well as non-dance related activities. If someone tells you "No" or "Stop," stop immediately and move on. We celebrate people taking care of themselves here at SCS and do not tolerate explicit disrespect or disregard of enthusiastic consent at any of our events.
- Be respectful to all people. Do not use misogynist, misandrist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, racist, or other prejudiced language. This also includes being respectful to event and venue staff, even if you are experiencing a personal frustration. Our events would not be possible without the goodwill of these individuals.
- Respect your fellow students' right to learn the dance role of their choice. We want to create a space where everyone is comfortable choosing their dance roles as a lead or a follow without any pressure to stick to traditional gender norms. Both the lead and follow role are awesome for everyone to learn and learning both can help you better understand the mechanics of the dance.
- Do not harass anyone at our events. We do not tolerate harassment of event participants in any form. Harassment includes offensive verbal comments (related to gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, OR religion), sexual language, images, or invitations in public spaces or online, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of workshops or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. Advocating for or encouraging any unacceptable behavior will also be considered harassment. Harassment of ANY kind will not be tolerated at any event venue, including dances, workshops, competitions, Twitter, Facebook, and other online avenues or social media affiliated with our events.
